Swirly Snowman Art Project for Kids

We got eleven inches of snow this weekend.  ELEVEN INCHES!  We spent the weekend playing in the snow, sledding, building tunnels, snowmen and forts!  It was a cold yet fun-filled weekend, but when Monday rolled around, this mama was ready for some indoor, warm time. Keeping with the theme of snow, I knew we needed a snowy craft to delight and entertain my son. Kids love snowmen, so creating snowmen in art projects is usually a win!  The swirly paper trick is one of the oldest in the book, but it was perfect in creating a unique and abstract snowman art project!  Never underestimate some of these old tricks that we have been taught since elementary days, they are usually some of the best ideas! Children are so delighted to see the new shape that their paper takes after wrapping it around a pencil/pen.

My favorite part of doing art with kids is the natural learning that occurs.  I’m a firm believer in learning from experiences, and art projects are the perfect way to do that! This art activity is perfect for fine motor skills (wrapping the paper around a pencil/pen).  This activity also teaches cause and effect (making a straight piece of paper curly by wrapping it).  The best part of this art activity is the fun and cheerful piece of art that you get to display at the end of it!

Supplies

  • Cardstock
  • Glue
  • Pen or Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Paper plate

Directions

  1. Create thin strips of paper with a paper cutter or scissors. If you have access to a paper cutter, it makes this step a lot quicker, but scissors will work just fine!
  2. Once you have your strips, start rolling them around your pencil/pen. We used the same length of paper strips for each of our snowman balls, we just stretched them out to create bigger/smaller ones.
  3. This is the most important tip! Gluing this project can get tricky, but I have the best hack!  Pour some glue on a paper plate, spread it out, and then lightly dip your pieces in the glue.  This ensures that you get the perfect amount of glue to adhere it to the paper.  It will save you from a big, sticky mess!
  4. Cut out your snowman accessories (hat, nose, scarf, etc.), and glue them on your snowman!

Make sure to display your creative snowman for festive and fun décor!  Hope you have fun with this one! If you are looking for more fun snowman crafts, look here!
